Opis
Urodził się w rodzinie ubogich słowackich imigrantów. W młodości chorował na pląsawicę (będącą prawdopodobnie powikłaniem szkarlatyny), która wpłynęła na jego późniejsze życie i wygląd. Studiował projektowanie użytkowe na Carnegie Mellon University, a w 1949 roku przeprowadził się do Nowego Jorku, gdzie zaczął pracować w przemyśle reklamowym i robił ilustracje dla wielu popularnych czasopism. Był twórcą nurtu pop-art i od lat 60. wypracowywał sobie miano jednego z najwybitniejszych artystów w Stanach Zjednoczonych. W latach 1963-1968 prowadził legendarne atelier The Factory, skupiające wielu nowojorskich twórców zaangażowanych w produkcję sztuki użytkowej, książek i filmów. Przez ten czas w asyście swoich współpracowników nakręcił ponad 60 produkcji, stając się jednym z najciekawszych twórców amerykańskiego kina eksperymentalnego. Pracował używając rozmaitych środków artystycznych, m.in. malarstwa, fotografii i rysunku. Jego filmy pozbawione były scenariusza - miały odzwierciedlać życie i ilustrować autentyczne zachowania aktorów. Jednym ze znamiennych przykładów takich dzieł był "Sen" (1963), przedstawiający osiem godzin snu przyjaciela Warhola, Johna Giorno. W podobnie statycznej poetyce był zrealizowany "Empire" - ośmiogodzinny portret budynku Empire State Building o zmierzchu. Głośnym przedsięwzięciem okazał się "Vinyl" (1965) na podstawie "Mechanicznej pomarańczy" Burgessa, a jednym z jego najbardziej cenionych dzieł był "Chelsea Girls" (1965), przedstawiający dwie równoległe historie zarejestrowane i odtwarzane jednocześnie na dwóch taśmach. Po zamachu 3 czerwca 1968 roku Warhol przestał osobiście angażować się w reżyserię, a koordynację nad filmowymi projektami przejął jego dotychczasowy asystent Paul Morrissey.
